A brief winter seawatch….

St Leonards Marina 10.20-11.30

Light but persistent passage with tide going out –
Gadwall – flock of 20 ducks passing W was partly or wholly of this species, Mallard – f 13 came in, Common scoter f5 coming in turned E, Velvet scoter 1 drake W, Red-throated diver 10 W 1 E, Guillemot 2 W, Razorbill f 3 W, Auk sp. 13 W 1 E, Great crested grebe 1 W, Lesser black-backed gull 4 W, Gannet 4 W.

Rock-a-Nore seabirds

Today I paid my first early morning visit to the harbour, in the hope of seeing a few passing seabirds. However, in half an hour after a gloomy dawn, I had seen just 6 Common Scoters get up off the sea, and a few local Fulmars gliding about.

No Grebes, Divers or Auks; it should be better in a couple of weeks !

Pett pools and Pannel Valley

A tranquil and clear afternoon with some good sightings over the pools and reedsbeds including a female Marsh harrier, 2 Stonechats (m & f), 4 Meadow Pipits, Swallows 3 N, a Merlin, a Kestrel, water rail, 2 Snipe, a Barn Owl, a mixed flock of 15 Redwings and 5 Fieldfare and 8 Brent Geese. Also of note, a Pike and a late Common Darter

6 Blackbirds, 12 Robins.

South Saxons 11.00
Some species in winter territories or foraging noted;- 1 Chiffchaff, 1 Goldcrest, 10 Robins, 3 Song thrushes, 6 Blackbirds, 1 Meadow pipit, 4 Goldfinches (perching on the heads of Wild Carrot in the meadow).

Saturday 17th November
Interesting to note at Torfield that two chiffchaffs still remain with the lively flock of approx. 30, including great tits, blue tits and 15 long tailed tits.
