Lesser Black backed Gulls

After a very wild night, with hail and interrupted electricity in Fairlight, I went down to Rock-a-Nore to see if any seabirds were moving in the rough conditions. This is an example of the Triumph of Optimism over Experience- its always disappointing-just 1 Red Throated Diver struggled past in an hour.

However amongst the gulls hugging the shore and heading west to feed were 9 Lesser Black backed Gulls; a common enough bird in England of course, but this is my highest winter count for this site.  As usual there were plenty of the larger, darker and white headed Great Black Backs: 85.
