Great Black backed Gulls

Great Black Backed Gulls

Seawatching from Rock-a-Nore is hard work at present, an hour this morning produced just 3 Red Throated Divers, a Great crested Grebe and 2 Gannets. However there were 100 Great Black backed Gulls , mostly adults, on the harbour arm and beach, including 2 close ones.
The photo shows the bright white heads of adult GBBs in winter, very different from the heavily streaked heads of the smaller and paler Lesser Black backs, which are irregular in small numbers here. Herring Gulls are also streaked on the head and neck in winter as shown in this picture; any Herring type gull with a bright white head this early in the winter would merit a closer look, as it would be likely to be a Yellow Legged Gull-though I’ve seen just 1 here.
