Wasp attack

Common Wasp killing Scaeva pyrastri

No, not a sensationalist Press headline, but a tiny drama witnessed in our Fairlight garden last evening. Attracted by a loud buzzing, my wife Jill spotted a wasp attacking another insect on the ground. Close examination showed this to be the large and common hoverfly Scaeva pyrastri; the picture shows its underside. Needless to say this was quickly subdued, I don’t know whether it was consumed by the wasp- which appears to be a Common Wasp-or carried off as larval food.
