Starfishes

An early morning walk to Fairlight Cove at full low tide revealed quite a few Herring and Great Black Backed Gulls catching Starfish in the shallow water. Quite a few were washed up, and movement of the tube feet [see picture]showed them to be alive. I paddled out to a small rock on which I could see a big one clinging, there were also a lot of smaller ones both on the rock and in the nearby water.
These were all Common Starfish [Asterias rubens], the presence of numbers of these may have attracted an unseasonal group of 4 Eiders which swam close to the rocks- they will eat Starfish
