Wandering along the strandline at Cliff End at the weekend, I found several pieces of a delicate seaweed with numerous small bladders. This is the succinctly named Japweed [Sargassum muticum], an alien invasive species accidentally introduced from the Pacific on oysters in the 1960’s, which is regarded as a pest as it can out-compete native species. I also photographed this at Rock-a-Nore in 2008, growing by the big sewer pipe; interestingly the NBN Gateway map shows no records for this seaweed between Folkestone and Eastbourne.
