Hastings Spring Bird Migration survey

NE or ENE f2 or 3 overcast clearing later moderate to good

Cliff End 0640-0740 AP
Gannet 50, Bar-tailed Godwit 22, Sandwich Tern 101, Common Gull 4, Med. Gull 1, Kittiwake 2, Red Throated Diver 1 and Swallow 3, all E.

Yesterday proved to be a remarkable day for Bar Tailed Godwits moving east up the channel, I was pleased to see over 500 off Rock-a-Nore, but the all day total at Dungeness was 7317, a record for that well studied site. Although I only saw a few off Cliff End today, 2000 had passed Dungeness by 0900, no doubt many birds pass too far out for us to see. Having been surprised to see a Black-tail with a group of Bar Tails at Glyne a couple of days ago, I was interested to see another with a group of 60 Bar-tails feeding at Denge Marsh, Dungeness. AP

At Bulverhythe three single swallows and a Brent goose east were noted. A Grey heron came in low over the sea harried by Herring gulls and went down towards South Saxons. Whitethroats, Blackcap and Lesser whitethroat could be heard singing along Bulverhythe coast.
