A Walk in the Park

A rare sunny day last Thursday coaxed me out into the Country Park Nature Reserve for a most enjoyable walk around the Warren Glen and Brakey Bank area. Signs of Spring were everywhere with the bright green foliage of the Brakey Bank bluebells showing well. The photo shows an excellent cluster of Jew’s Ear fungus spotted on an old elder branch. This gets it’s name from the theory that Judas Iscariot is said to have hanged himself on an elder tree.

  1. You pay your money and choose your myth, or tree!

The belief that Judas Iscariot hanged himself from a Judas Tree probably stems from the fact that the common French name for the tree is “Arbre de Judee” which indicates the region, Judaea, where the tree commonly grows.

I am not sure how the elder tree became involved in the second myth but Judas is associated with Jew’s Ear fungus through its Latin name, “Auricularia auricula judae” (ear of Judas).

Info on both myths can be found in the likes of Wikipedia but I researched my info on Jew’s Ear fungus in “Mushrooms” by Roger Phillips and “Wayside & Woodland Fungi” by Findlay. Both works cite the elder tree association with Judas Iscariot.
