Lots of Gannets and a Firecrest

An early look at the sea off Rock-a-Nore yesterday [Jan 24] produced another personal best seabird count, with at least 100 Gannets busily fishing -an impressive sight.

Otherwise 60 auks and 10 Red Throated Divers flew east, and 17 Great Crested Grebes were on the sea.

One of the features of last autumn’s migration watch was the dearth of Firecrests compared to the previous year, and this seems to have been reflected in a lack of wintering birds. So I was pleased to enjoy close and prolonged views of one busily feeding in brambles in Market Wood, Fairlight yesterday evening.
