Metoecus paradoxus, Church Wood

What type of insect is this? Fly, saw-fly, beetle?

Click below to find out:

This weird insect is in fact a beetle, Metoecus paradoxus, the wasp nest beetle. It lives in wasp nests underground and is rarely recorded because of it’s reclusive habits. This individual came to a moth trap during a moth evening at Church Wood in September 2007.
