Hastings Autumn Landbird Migration Survey (additional)

Forgot to post this earlier. First thing in the morning I checked to see if there was any vismig but it seemed very quiet, then just after 9am noticed the house martins swarming past the window so went out on roof terrace to count. Spectacular but brief passage between 9am-9.45am.

West St Leonards, 9am-10am
House Martin 6000+w (and dense flocks briefly stopping to feed over undercliff sycamores)
Swallow 150w
Chaffinch 5w
Grey Wagtail 1w

Chiffchaff 16 (feeding in undercliff scrub)
Goldcrest 2

Mute Swan 2 (on sea offshore)

also 1 Little Egret flew east at about 2.30pm

  1. Yes the early morning mist lifted and the house martins came through. They must have been grounded somewhere, maybe on buildings in the town, as I’ve seen that before.
